From Wounds to Power - An Inspirational Story
Irene Mbalilwa, Wangu Kanja Foundation, CREAW Kenya, GEM Trust, Mukuru kwa Njenga.
I was only five years old when I became a survivor of sexual abuse, first by a trusted neighbour, then by close relatives. In my community, silence was survival, so I carried that trauma alone for years, watching it poisoned my self-worth. But my story didn’t end in silence.
Through the support of Wangu Kanja Foundation and later the She Leads program under GEM Trust, I found a safe spaces, healing, and the power of my voice. I turned my experience into advocacy: mentoring girls, training youth, and co-founding Circles of Hope CBO to support survivors like me.
I now sit in national advocacy spaces, including the Gender Technical Working Group, I was also given a leadership role as a GYW Country Network representive for GEM Trust, participated in formation of Africa sexual and reproductive health right bill and also wrote a memo and present it to the county on what should be included in the County Integrated Development Fund in the year 2022.
I also took part in the review of PADV rule which was launched in 2023. I am also a trainer and a mentor on advocacy and gender-based violence which help me earn a living. GEM also gave me numerous platforms including organising the first registration of person with disability card in Mukuru kwa Njenga.
Through the Circles of Hope CBO, we received grants from CREAW Kenya under Mastercard foundation which helped me start a business.
I received various training from GEM Trust including: financial literacy which has helped in managing my business as an entrepreneur, Gender mainstreaming training, communication training, gender budgeting, VCAT training just to mention a few that have helped me to elevate the voices of young women in my community.
